About

My name’s Frances and I’m currently a Masters student in Comparative Literature and Latin at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, Munich, funded by a Leverhulme Study Abroad Studentship. I previously spent a year as a ‘special student’ at Harvard, funded by a Herchel Smith Scholarship, while for my undergraduate degree I studied Classics at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. My major research interests are Augustan Latin poetry, the reception of classical mythology and translation. You might be interested in this blog if:

  • You think Classics is a useless subject about dead languages that is of no relevance to the world today, but are ready to be proved wrong.
  • You are interested in the contemporary arts and want to know more about those classical allusions that seem to pop up everywhere.
  • You are fascinated by classical history or mythology and want to know even more about how it permeates our lives today.
  • You enjoy reading classical texts but are confused by the huge range of different translations, re-tellings and reinterpretations.
  • You have even the vaguest interest in Western culture and would quite like to know where it all started.

Of course, there is so much to say about the links between modern culture and the classical world that each blog post will only be able to give a little taste of the richness of this relationship. There are also some very knotty debates within classical scholarship and as it is impossible to cover all angles within a 500 word blog post, I will be generalising and summarising mercilessly, but at the end of each post I will include links and recommendations of where to find out more if you’re interested. And you are very welcome to get in touch with me via the contact page if you’ve got a particularly burning question!
